Raw White Chocolate

By | BLOG | No Comments

So one of the things you probably already know about Steve & I is, we love chocolate 🍫
.
Yep. We love making and devouring raw chocolate. I love the whole process of making it, infusing it with love & of course with doTerra food grade oils 😍
.
I am a big fan of cacao butter, and it’s the only thing I use when we make chocolate. Coconut Oil is great, don’t get me wrong, and the recipe we use for White Chocolate includes it. However the whole experience of cacao butter in your mouth is incredible
.
Cacao butter in itself is a wonderful superfood.

  • It’s a healthy fat. This 100% vegan fat is a great addition for those who are on a plant-based diet or who are trying to get more healthy, saturated fats in their diet. Its full of fatty acids like oleic acid, palmitic acid, and stearic acid that are antioxidants that fight free radicals.
  •  It makes us happy, It boosts neurotransmitters and balances hormones.
  • Helps you age well. It’s packed with polyphenols. These antioxidants help you age well by fighting free radicals and by reducing the appearance of aging.
  • Increases Immunity. Those polyphenols also help the immune system fight free radicals and reduce inflammation. Inflammation is the key cause to the majority of illnesses. Reducing inflammation and fighting free radicals prevents illness from becoming damaging disease.
  • Revs up the metabolism. The good fats, hormone regulating properties and magnesium of cacao butter contribute to make it a food that will prime the pump.

So who’s in for eating more chocolate 🙌🍫

Turmeric

By | BLOG | No Comments

Turmeric is the spice that gives curry its yellow color. It has been used in India for thousands of years as a spice and medicinal herb.

Recently, science has started to back up what Indians have known for a long time — it really does contain compounds with medicinal properties.

These compounds are called curcuminoids, the most important of which is curcumin. Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant.

Unfortunately, curcumin is poorly absorbed into the bloodstream. It helps to consume black pepper with it, which contains piperine, a natural substance that enhances the absorption of curcumin by 2,000%. Curcumin is also fat soluble, so it may be a good idea to take it with a fatty meal.

Curcumin is a natural anti-inflammatory compound, increases the antioxidant capacity of the body, lowers risk of brain disease, lowers the risk of heart disease, can help prevent cancer, may help prevent and treat alzheimers,  ease arthritis, incredible benefits against depression, help delay aging along with many others.

We LOVE to use turmeric in our cooking, just add it to any of your meals.  Beware of the yellow staining though!!  However, by far our most favourite way is to create a smoothie with it!!!  We make our own turmeric paste (see below) & add it to everything! You can of course make a turmeric latte, mix one teaspoon along with some honey if you choose & top with your favourite warmed milk.

Magnesium Body Butter

By | D.I.Y | No Comments

I am a huge fan of magnesium because it is so critical to our overall health. While minerals are very important for our health, magnesium stands a bit above the rest just because it is required for SO many bodily functions.

Magnesium is one of the six macro-minerals essential for our bodies and supports our nerve function, production of energy from food and helps builds bones, we can see what other benefits come from getting more magnesium into our bodies.

It helps with sleep, relaxes your muscles – hence being great for cramps, supports stronger, healthier bones, relieves constipation, supports heart health, decreases blood pressure, decreases the risk of diabetes, helps to alleviate anxiety and helps with depression.

One of my favorite ways to get more magnesium into my body is via transdermal application. When we supplement internally, the amount our body absorbs greatly depends on our digestive health. Most of us are dealing with some sort of digestive dysfunction from minor to severe. So there is a strong likelihood that you are absorbing very little of the magnesium you take internally.

That is why transdermal (via the skin) application can be so helpful — it bypasses the digestive system.

Magnesium oil sprays are one of the most common ways to use magnesium transdermally. But, many people don’t like this method because it can sometimes make your skin sting or feel itchy. My kids can’t stand the itchy skin feeling as you can imagine.

Lotions and body butters are a great alternative because they reduce or completely prevent that stinging, itching sensation. You can buy these lotions and butters pre-made, but they can often be expensive, which is why I love this body butter that I create with doTerra’s Replenishing Body Butter.

Out of one jar of doTerra’s Replenishing Body Butter you will end up with 2 jars of whipped Magnesium Body Butter. Plus I add Vetiver, Cedarwood & Copaiba, 4 drops of each.

Some other oils that would be beautiful are

  • Lavender
  • Frankincense
  • Myrrh
  • Litsea
  • Balance
  • Lavender Peace
  • Lemongrass and I know many others.

So let’s create our Magnesium oil so we can make our body butter. Firstly you will need some quality Magnesium Flakes. Simply mix a 1:1 ratio. 1 cup boiling water to 1 cup of Magnesium Flakes. Stir until dissolved and that’s it. Store in a plastic or glass bottle for future use as we won’t use it all in our body butter.

Our next step is the body butter.

Ingredients

  • 1 tub doTERRA's Replenishing Body Butter
  • 5 tbsp Magnesium Oil recipe above
  • Essential Oils of your Choice Vetiver, Cedarwood, Copaiba

Instructions

  1. Place your doTERRA Replenishing Body Butter in a small bowl.

  2. Add your magnesium Oil.

  3. Using a hand mixer or whisk, whip the oil into the butter until the magnesium oil is thoroughly combined (1-2 minutes on medium-high speed).
  4. Add any essential oils that you are using and mix thoroughly.
  5. Scrape into a bottle or jar (the container it came in works great) and store at room temperature.
  6. If it ever separates, you can easily stir to re-mix, but I have found that if the butter is whipped well when made that it does not separate.

Recipe Notes

I love to start using this on the feet, as your body absorbs the Magnesium, I find the itchiness goes away. With the itchy sensations going, it means you are more likely to be able to apply on other body parts, legs, arms, tummy etc. If not just roll with gifting yourself or your loved ones with foot massages.

COFFEE

By | BLOG | No Comments

I used to hate the stuff, couldn’t stand it. Then I loved it and couldn’t get enough of it. Now I am indifferent, I don’t drink it but I don’t despise it either. I just much prefer a different hot beverage.

Coffee was always around as a kid, it just wasn’t something I drank and I truly didn’t really start drinking coffee until I was about 26 or 27 and then it was just your good old freeze dried gear from the supermarket, Moccona was my go to brand.  I can remember my first real coffee experience, going on a camping trip with a girlfriend and her father, we pulled over at a park and out came the thermos, coffee, sugar, milk and for the father a hip flask. Coffee was made and whiskey added to the old guys cup and we sat and enjoyed. The thing that  I can remember the most other than an old dude adding alcohol to his coffee at 9am was how I felt getting back in the car. My god dam heart was racing in fact it felt like it was going to burst outta my chest. I felt wired I felt intense and to be honest a touch scared. It’s weird to say but I felt good as well and of course I went back for more at the next stop and so my coffee journey had begun. I guess for the next ten years or so it was pretty tame really. Until Lee and I, had an epiphany and started Epiphany coffee which was a mobile vintage van with an espresso machine in it and holy moly did my coffee interest go through the roof!

All of a sudden flat whites, cappuccinos,  lattes, short blacks and macchiatos became common names.  I became a small double shot flat kinda guy really quickly and I won’t lie I loved it, I loved talking about it, I loved the art of making it and the science behind it. It became our world. And then we made the next obvious move, open a cafe of course and move from flat whites to straight double shot espressos, I was deep and had gone hard core right?   It was nothing for me to smash 3 or 4 of those little black cups of gold into myself in a day.  I was at the point of using words like sweet to describe coffee and was always chasing the perfect pour.  I didn’t notice my heart racing anymore it was like I had become comfortable with it, sure it still gave me a pick up first thing in the morning then at 10ish and again at lunch. I was usually pretty careful not to indulge after say 2 o’clock for fear of not being able to get to sleep.

Then one random day it hit me that I was under its spell and completely reliant on it, to boost my mood and give me energy though the day, the constant pick you up companion. That random day was about two days after not having a cup for a bunch of reasons the main being I was so obsessed with “my” coffee that I wasn’t prepared to drink anyone else’s, my stubbornness cost me a great load of pain. Oohh my goodness the headaches were excruciating, borderline crippling, three days in and the opportunity to get back on board with “my” coffee and I thought fuck it I’m done I have come this far let’s see how long I can survive without it.

I reckon I was still feeling the come down a couple of weeks later but every day I kept saying, it’s going to get easier, it’s going to get easier, surely it gets easier, when the fuck is it going to get easier. It got to the point where I was totally repulsed by the look and smell of coffee, I even tried to reacquaint  myself with it but didn’t have the stomach, I couldn’t bring myself to drink it. I did manage to muscle down a cup of my dear old friend six or so months ago and wowzers it was like I had wound  the clock back ten years to my very first cup. My heart started to race, everything felt fast, I rang Lee and she could tell straight away because of how I was speaking, I just couldn’t control it.

So I made a decision not to go back down that road. I’m not saying that I will never indulge in a cup ever again, I’m saying I prefer other hot beverages with health benefits at the moment.

POO

POO

Here is a topic that seems dear to both of our boys at the moment, our 6 year old started it and it has rubbed off to our 3 year old.  POOPIE head and I’m gonna poop on you, are two well loved fav’s that come out of both their mouths regularly.

It has however got me thinking, you guessed it about poo, how we poo, how we wipe, what we use to wipe, the impact of what we eat to the “style” of stool we pass and if it’s an indication of our guts health.

shit02

First things first, I’m gonna lay the cards on the table and get it out there.  I am a back the front wiper a semi scrunch semi fold use heaps of paper kinda guy.  What’s a back the front wiper I hear you ask, well it’s a between the legs wipe instead of the traditional old fashion reach around the back and wipe version.  I don’t know why or how I even learnt to do it this way, perhaps it’s how my parents do it;  I haven’t been game enough to ask the question, it would feel a bit weird!  Which is how the reach around the back feels to me as well?  The semi scrunch semi fold really depends on the type of poo I’m dealing with, there is nothing worse than running with a fold, going in a touch hard, ripping the paper and getting shit on your finger, so balance between scrunch and fold is extremely important.  As far as paper type we have always gone down the recycled road which can be a bumpy road at times, thickness is something you don’t want to take lightly, otherwise it’s good old poo fingers again.

I feel we have this issue sorted now though because the guys at Who Gives A Crap have got it nailed, a thick generous, sturdy ply, 3 ply to be precise, 100% recycled, no chlorine, inks, dyes or scents.  It’s the best recycled bog roll you can get and they are doing some pretty amazing stuff in poor communities to boot, with their profits….check em out here

As for how we poo I am a straight up sit down and get to business dude, although  I have been known to do a bit of “face booking”.  I saw the other day a contraption that you put in front of the loo that lifts your feet up so you are in a squatting position, it’s called a squatty potty.  Now I haven’t done a massive amount of research on these suckers but from what I have seen they look pretty bloody awesome and I am going to give it a whirl, anything that makes it easier and cleaner to crap and better for your body then I’m in boots and all!!  I will do a re post after a trial run…..bet you will be hanging out for that.

In terms of what we eat and how we crap, that seems to get quiet technical and relates back to gut health and what the body allows into the system and what it rejects as waste so I won’t go into depth other than to say the bodies gut has a lining that allows certain things through that are beneficial to our systems and rejects the waste, now if our lining is compromised which is referred to as leaky gut we start to see issues.  This is a whole other topic with many different aspects that we will cover in more detail later.  Lets leave it simple and say that the cleaner the food you put in your gob the more efficient the body is at using it, the better your logs at the other end.

I know it’s a strange topic to bring up but if you take out all the grossness it’s a pretty important thing to look at, maybe not literally!

Crap, Bog, Poo, Shit, whatever you call it try and make it the healthiest, easiest experience you can, a clean system is the best system so let’s not clog it up.

Poo jokes are funny and I’m sure my boys will get a kick out of them, so post them,  just try to keep them clean – ish

14632887_1195294780553026_8772449818078659771_n

I can clearly remember when Lee told me she wanted to invest $1500 of our money into an essential oil kit, I honestly thought we couldn’t afford it first of all and secondly I had no idea what, how and why they are used.  I started googling essential oils and in particular doTerra as a company, I guess I was trying to find justification for spending “that type of money” whatever that means!!

So I dug and dug and dug some more and for some reason I was disappointed to find everything I read, everything I watched and everything I listened to was positive, positive, positive, it was all good.  Imagine that, being disappointed about something being positive!!

So we parted with our hard earned cash and entered into the world of essential oils.

Lee was super stoked when the package arrived and I was a bit more like eehhh whatever, cool, yeah sweet babe, nice oils hey and for me they kinda sat on a shelf or in a box or somewhere, I am sure you could say I wasn’t really interested.

As we were starting our oil journey we were also running a Paleo/ Vegan organic cafe, I know, I know Paleo/Vegan? How does that work?  Well it’s a blend of both worlds and a big part of what we did was raw vegan cakes, slices and bliss balls, dessert type stuff, right.   And this is where the light bulb got turned on.   An epiphany if you will.

Lee made a cake which wasn’t anything unusual, in fact it was more than normal.  It was a raw chocolate and orange torte.  Now we had been mucking around with this sort of stuff for a while but fuck me!!  This cake was unbelievable, I remember thinking I could eat this whole cake if she let me, well at least half of it no worries.  It was simply divine and is still a part of our menu today.  The secret ingredient Wild Orange essential oil of course.  And so my eyes are fully open and receptive to essential oils right?  Heck Yeah!!  All of a sudden I was sticking oil in everything, smoothies, cakes, water and bliss balls, most times it was super successful although every now and then I went a touch over the top, my fennel and banana smoothie only got tried once.

So my journey began with a food experience and grew rapidly into just about all aspects of my life.  I use them for sleep, relaxation, focus, if I’m cranky, for motivation, if I have a crook belly, the list goes on and on, in our toothpaste, to smell good and of course in food.

Occasionally a drop or two of lime even gets put into a beer on a Sunday arvo!!

Sugar

By | BLOG | One Comment

So as you may have gathered I love food, who doesn’t right? But for a long, long time it really was the wrong kind of food.  For me it was heaps of bread, cereal, dairy, sugar, sugar, sugar and more sugar.  As a kid I used to sneak the icing sugar container down from the top shelf and spoon the stuff straight into my gob.  I also went through a phase while working in construction where my breakfast consisted of  a can of coke and a mars bar.  These stories are not just one offs, my whole food life up until about 4 years ago pretty much was crap.

Fast forward to now and my diet is completely different, no dairy, no grain and sugar is avoided as much as possible, I use honey as a sweetener if needed now.

Why am I writing this stuff?  Why do you need to know my food journey and why would you even give a toss?

Well I guess I want to put it out there, that change can happen and it can happen to you, if you put your mind to it, it’s not that fucking hard!!

I was a five weetbix a morning kid growing up with cow’s milk and a dessert spoonful of sugar  for breakfast, a couple of sandwiches for lunch maybe a packet of chips, burgers, pies hot chips and deep fried sugar (I made that last one up)

So the point is change can be made!

Its granola with coconut milk a banana and goji berries with coconut yogurt instead now or maybe just simple straight up scrambled eggs, chicken and salad for lunch maybe?  I keep it simple and to be honest my taste buds have changed, evolved if you will or perhaps reverted back to what they should be.

The thought of having cows milk is now repulsive even cheese which was one of my all time favs doesn’t even interest me. I cant remember the last time I had a can of soft drink.  People say its hard or it’s too expensive and I reckon that’s a whole bunch of bullshit.  If you can afford to feed yourself and your family at Mcdonalds for fucks sake you can afford to buy and cook a chook with salad it’s god dam laziness that’s the problem and the negative “I cant do it mindset”

It’s not rocket science otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to do it.  Its taking small steps over time to train your mind and body.  I didn’t just go one day “you know what fuck it I’m just gonna stop eating bread and have roast chicken & avocado instead”  It takes time and persistence.  Start with simple goals, try getting through a day without eating bread, then a week, and then replace it altogether with maybe a gluten free wrap,  I don’t reckon you will stay on those things for long they taste like shit!  Small incremental steps were the key for me.  Do the same with everything else you stick in your mouth.  Try half halving your milk at first; by that I mean mix half cows and maybe half macadamia milk together or coconut.  The initial change is hard, when you first try almond milk you are more than likely gonna say it tastes like shit, it’s because you are used to drinking milk from a grass eating bovine.  Be persistent and change will happen and for the better.  Eventually over time things will start appearing in your pantry. There is stuff in our cupboard now that I wouldn’t have had a clue what it even was 2 years ago.  Nutritional yeast, Kim chi, Kombucha, Kelp noodles……..what the fuck???  I know what they are now and they are all awesome!!

You need to make change as easy and pain free as possible otherwise you are more than likely going to give up, that’s why small steps are the key.  If you have been smashing soft drink for the past 15 years it’s going to be real tough going cold turkey, don’t get too hard on yourself just gradually replace it with something better until you are drinking coconut water or kefir.

There is so much info out there these days, do yourself a favour and educate yourself for better health and a superior version of yourself.  Fill yourself with knowledge , if you don’t know any better you won’t change.

I used to eat rice bubbles in the morning as a kid sometimes; my way of eating them was to fill up a huge bowl cover them with milk then add sugar to the top, I would then scoop the very top layer of sugary bubbles off and eat them until the next layer revealed itself which of course needed another layer of sugar, this I did 3 or 4 times each time a new layer of sugar added until all I was left with was milk and sugar at the bottom which I gladly scoffed down. It’s actually making me feel sick writing this story down but I wanted to get my point across about what used to be my normal to what’s my normal now.  It can be done you just need small tweaks over time in mind and body.  It’s not too hard, maybe you are too set in your ways.  It’s not too expensive, maybe your priorities are wrong.

Your life does not get better by chance……It gets better by change.  “Jim Rohn”

The Positive Propaganda Project

By | BLOG | No Comments

OK, so I wanted my first ever blog to be just a quick explanation about why I decided to even start a blog and why I called it The Positive Propaganda Project.

This is my perspective or opinions on subjects with tips and hints of value that may interest you or not.  The purpose is to pass on some of my life experiences and journey that hopefully you find interesting, amusing, beneficial, real and authentic, and also give you the push to discover and question.

I am not an expert in any field other than life, My Life to be exact and this is where I draw my inspiration from.

My aim is to keep it real without sounding or coming across as a wanker. I am on a journey of self discovery, as you are, so I want  to learn and evolve with you as we go.  I’m sure some interesting subjects are going to come up with people having their own opinion which is great.  The goal of this project is to grow so the object is to be positive and look at the positives

So why the Propaganda Project?

I know when I first thought of the word propaganda, negative ideas were the ones that jumped into my mind.  So I got to thinking about it, then looked the word up and surprising as it may seem the definition of propaganda is:

“Information, ideas or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movement, institution, and nation……….world??

So I want to spread positivity, I want to spread ideas, good positive ideas, good intelligent information.  I want to spread it deliberately and widely to HELP everyone.  I also want it to be a shortish read, so its quick and easy without boring you stupid by dribbling on with crap.  My time is important and so is yours.  Short, sharp, get my point across and give you ways to discover more if you wish, that’s the point.

Now I might not have the most elegant writing style and the cleanest mouth but its me, its my authentic self out in the open.

Judge me if you will!!
